Extra bits and bobs, points we couldn't jam into our other posts. If you have any questions, leave a comment here and the mods will answer them as quickly as possible.
Q. What occupations are available in the New York Complex? A. All the Complexes are run by Horizon, but all they're kept running by the residents, the Average Joes of the world, in other words our characters, so more or less any job you can think of is available. The Complex would, for instance, need electricians to keep the power grids and generators running, to repair the phone lines when they go down. They would need plumbers to keep the water running and to repair the pipes when the water freezes, which given the climate is a lot. Builders to maintain the structures of the Complex, anything manual labour-wise is probably a safe bet. In addition there are jobs in the few restaurants that the Complex contains, jobs as cooks and waitresses. Things like 'artist' or 'photographer' do not qualify as jobs at teh moment, the humans are trying to rebuild the world after all, they don't have much time to stand around looking at sculptures and photos. They can however be hobbies.
In addition to that point, unless you want you character to live on the streets - again probably not a wise thing given the climate but it can be worked out if it's essential to your character, we just don't want fifty hobos running around. The Authority would probably make them 'disappear' - they really need some kind of job. No, 'hooker' doesn't count.
Extra things to keep in mind:
- Doctors/Nurses are in the minority now, given that its a specialised field there aren't a lot of trained medics in the world.
- We won't want a lot of characters with the same occupation, it's just more fun with more diversity. We'll be keeping an eye on the numbers and certain occupations may become restricted for a time. Until some characters die off things change. There are lots of jobs your character could have, be creative!
As the game has not yet started you can now HOLD an occupation: Don't panic, it's more so you can see where there are already taken occupations than anything else, if you have any questions drop an email our way, or leave a comment.
Q. What is the general consensus on weapons? A. No one in the general public have access to weapons or any kind. Guns, knives etc are all kept under strict lock and key by the Authority in the Warehouses. It makes it easier to control the streets and makes the Complexes safer places to live, times are hard after all, who's to say someone with a gun wouldn't go on a sudden rampage?
Q. How do I write powers for my character if they don't know they have them? A. At some point all the mutants will discover their powers, whether they already know when you submit the bio/start them in the game or not, write as if they are already aware of them, because at some point they will be! Not only will it make it easier on you, so that you don't have to reword everything when they come to find out about their mutation, but it means that everyone else knows what your character is capable of, it'll just help everything flow better.
Q. Where do minors live if they have no living parents or guardians? A. All minors who do not have at least one parent or guardian live in designated levels/floors of the Apartment blocks. They live two to a room and share one bathroom between four students. This arrangement is largely so that they are all together in one place and easier to supervise that way, the halls are patrolled at night, and as with the whole of the apartment buildings they are generally supervised from a distance by Horizon.
Q. Are glasses/prescriptions a thing of the past now? A. No. Horizon still have the capabilities to test eyes and update prescriptions, however renewing prescriptions takes a long time, weeks, even months as it's all taken care of outside the residential Complexes, at a central compound. The New York Complex is one of the biggest in the United States and as such they are lucky enough to have an optician working at the Medlabs. So in short; yes, glasses exist and are available, but contact lenses are harder to come by.
Q. Would Horizon have small herds/groups of animals for produce? Like cows and chickens and stuff, for milk and eggs etc? A. Yes. Horizon keep their animals at a central 'Facility' and ship the produce out to the residential complexes having inoculated enough animals to ensure that continued breeding would not be affected by genetic defects form a smaller gene pool, and to save them from the radiation. Milk, eggs and things like meat and vegetables are, of course, harder to get hold of than they used to be, a lot of food is dry packaged these days but fresh produce does exist to a certain degree.
Q. What about Cigarettes? Are they still produced and available? A. Yes. The human race is extremely self-indulgent after all, and cigarettes are one of those things that have endured, like alcohol, Horizon now largely controls the production of them and also like alcohol, they are shipped to the Complexes from a central Facility. Sometimes the Complex will have them in abundance, and sometimes they will have none at all. It's hit and miss.
Q. Can you get fired? A. Essentially no. The residents keep the Complex running after all, and firing people is not really going to do the place any favours once stuff stars breaking and there are not enough people around to fix it. While no one gets paid exactly, it's not possible to become unemployed either. However. If you make waves in the Complex, if you screw up, turn up to work drunk or don't do your job, you ear 'Points' against your name. A sort of three strikes and you're out deal. Once you earn a certain number of Points the Authority will start revoking privileges and luxuries and considering there aren't many of either to be had in this day and age, no one is going to be happy about that. Generally it will be things like marking you with a black light pen so that the 'tenders in Rostat or Cavern know not to serve you alcohol, or meaning you can't by cigarettes or luxuries like chocolate and if things get really bad even things like the aforementioned milk and eggs and even fresh bread. Staying on the straight and narrow gives people access to all Horizons provides, straying from it takes that away after a time.
Q. People still die sometimes, right? So what do they do with the bodies? A. Graveyards are in the wastelands, and they're not very elegant, no one really stands on ceremony anymore, they don't even have funerals as a rule. The Authority take the bodies out into the wastelands with an armed escort that is all the public really know. As far as they are concerned the bodies are gone and that is the end of it.
