THE COMPLEXES.

Due to the lack of resources in the world in the fall out of Nuclear War, the population are now housed in The Complexes. These clusters of buildings are not exactly in pristine condition, often needing structural work to keep them standing or to keep the water running or the electricity on, but they provide a home for all those that survived the war. Most major cities had a Complex compiled at their centre while the small towns decayed and fell into disrepair. Even the fringes of the cities have rotted and are now abandoned, and strange creatures ravaged by the radiation stalk the wastelands, meaning it's generally better to stay within the safety of The Complex.

Each Complex is fully self-sufficient from the outside world, with their own limited food supply and power generation. They generally follow the same layout and cover six to eight city blocks and contain the same general areas that are fully staffed by the residents of the Complex. New York is one of the biggest Complexes. Further information is split into sections below.

Complexes are powered largely by central generators which are kept in good order by an in house work force, individual buildings have their own back up generators should the power fail at any time, as it has a habit of doing due to the climate.

The borders of the Complexes are guarded by the Authority, a warped form of the boys in blue from before the war, they are now more like soldiers, all are heavily armed and the protection of the Complex is their main function. They take their orders from the government and no one else. They are there to keep the residents in and much as keep grotesque mutated animals out. The perimeter is alarmed to this end, no one can get in and no one can get out without the alarm calling attention to the fact, a high pitched wailing will be pumped through the outdoor speaker system, the Authority are alerted to the sector in which the breach took place and the red warning lights will begin to flash.

NB: Other complexes cannot be reached on foot; they are extremely isolated; think 30 Days of Night

____________

HOUSING/APARTMENT BLOCKS
Much like any normal apartment blocks each occupant has their own space, generally with a kitchen and living area and one or two bedrooms. Laws are not tight on who may share their apartment with whom and some people have been forced to double up anyway given the number of residents. There is a laundry room in the basement of each building with washers and dryers and soaps are provided by Horizon to be shared by the building as a whole.

MEDICAL BUILDING: 'MEDLABS'
This building does exactly what its title suggests. Manned by a limited, overworked staff the Medlab functions as a hospital for the Complex. While not as large as its pre-war equivalents, it does have an Emergency Department and a General Ward it does not have an ICU. Anyone who cannot recover sufficiently on the general ward is out of luck, the bottom line being that there simply aren't the resources to sustain someone in such a fragile state.
NB. The Medlabs are severly understaffed; doctors/nurses/orderlies are sought after.

GYM
Each complex has a gym building, generally they are very simple and unchanged from the sort of gyms we would recognise today. Most contain an indoor pool and weight room.

BARS/CLUBS/RESTAURANTS
Usually a Complex will have one of each of these, though depending on the size of the Complex there may be two or more in order to deal with the number of residents seeking a reprieve from their harsh lives. There are a handful of the usual sort of 'take-out' places too, though obvious with supplies sometimes being hard to come by they are not always open and it can be quite hit and miss.

NEW YORK:
Cavern :- The only club in the New York Complex, it sees it's fair share of fights as one might imagine with it being the up tempo place that it is, a place where residents can blow off steam, and not always in the most constructive of ways. With a dance floor, a bar, some tables and a casual seating area it has pretty much everything that might be needed for a night out.

Rostat :- The only bar in the New York Complex, much like Cavern violence is not an unheard of occurrence at the bar. While more casual than its sister site, and certainly quieter without the thumping baselines and dance floor, where there's liquor there's usually some sort of disturbance.

Miseti :- The first of two restaurants in the New York Complex, it's large enough to cater for a decent number of people but it's usually almost impossible to get a table without reserving one in advance because of the sheer demand on it. Miseti is the more 'upmarket' of the two restaurants, the place that the Magistrate and his staff tend to frequent and therefore gets a large share of the resources available to the Complex and tends t produce more 'fancy' meals.

Haresa :-This is the second restaurant, it's smaller and quieter and less busy that it's big sister Miseti, but that's largely due to the fact that they have less to work with here, the best products from Horizon tend to be allocated to the bigger restaurant first and then Haresa afterwards. Despite that the service here is friendly and warm, and the food is plain and simple, just the sort of thing that an unfussy population would find to their tastes.

SCHOOL
There are still children in the world and they still need a basic education. Class sizes are large, the curriculum is simple and straightforward and the general consensus is that when a teenager leaves education they go directly into work as the human race attempt to rebuild the world. Universities are in the extreme minority nowadays.

WAREHOUSES
These buildings are generally kept away from the residential and recreational areas of the Complex. They house medical supplies and weaponry, as well as any and all emergency stocks for gas, oil, etc that might be needed. Only authorised personnel have access to the Warehouses, access is strictly regulated by the Authority.

WASTELANDS
The wastelands include everything outside of the limits of the Complexes, beyond the borders defended by the Authority. Ruined and abandoned buildings that have fallen into utter disrepair, ravaged by the harsh climate are the home to a whole host of creatures. Animals that were mutated by the radiation in a number of ways, most becoming more rabid and vicious, some turning cannibalistic, feeding on their own kind when food was scarce, these are the things that the Authority defend the boarders against as they would happily feed on any wayfaring human that got in their way.

These are generally the types of animals that would be found in the wastelands: Coyotes, dogs, mountain lions (cougars, pumas or panthers), bears, bobcats/lynx, eagles, foxes, wolves, ravens, vultures. NB. Birds are in the extreme minority now.
